What Downtown Las Vegas Restaurant Would You Recommend For Nice Dinner?

First, let me say, I enjoy reading your informative newsletter.

My husband and I will be in your wonderful city in October. What restaurant would you recommend for a nice dinner downtown? We ate at Hugos’ Cellar last year and was not pleased with the dinner. We have eaten there previously, but the quality has slipped. We will be celebrating our 42nd anniversary, so we would like a special dining experience.

Thank You,
Susan

Ted Responds:

Wow… too bad to hear Hugo’s has slipped. Unfortunately, Plaza closed Center Stage. What a great place that was!

We’ve heard great things about Vic and Anthony’s at Golden Nugget of late (steakhouse). Binion’s Ranch Steakhouse has a great view and we’ve enjoyed it over the years. But… it has been a while so I don’t know if it is maintaining.

Flame Steakhouse at El Cortez continues to be quality and nice (but not opulent) surroundings at a price that won’t completely break your wallet.

Since it is an anniversary, you might be better off hitting a nice restaurant on The Strip you’ve been interested in. May not be cheap, but no question The Strip has so many more great dining options.

We accidently found an incredible Japanese restaurant a couple visits back. It’s called Aburiya Raku and you have to have reservations. We have had two incredibly special meals there. It was an experience never to forget both times. We found it because we were driving around trying to find Asian food on my phone’s google maps application, and it came up on the list, with 4 star recommendations from anyone that commented.

We went to Vegas last November and of course I gathered up a lot of coupons prior to going. I got a restaurant coupon for $2 that gave us $50 towards dinner at Hennessey’s Irish Pub/Restaurant, so we figured we would try it. It is located a little further down the street from the main casinos and overhead display, on the right side of the next block where things start to quiet down.
After viewing the menu online, it looked like it would be good, “safe” fare for my “meat and potatoes” kind of guy.
We were so pleasantly surprised by the excellent steaks we had as well as the ample portions and incredible sides! The desserts (though we could barely get to them) were also decadent (and huge!) and be sure to try their authentic root beer floats!
Our waitress was a complete doll and helped us plan our evening downtown and gave us some great tips for the rest of our Vegas stay. They were also very accommodating to the wheelchair we had and we felt very comfortable.
It was a nice quiet dinner (rare to find in Vegas) with a chance to actually watch a sports game or simply find a quiet corner to have an awesome dinner. We ate early, which probably saved us from an assumed crowd of regulars that probably show up for the bar atmosphere later in the evening.
We enjoyed it so much, that we are already planning on going again (maybe twice) on our next visit to Vegas this May! And I even got that same great coupon offer again!

Another nice restaurant with a fantastic view is Firefly. We went there and enjoyed it immensely. Food, service was very good, and the view at night of Fremont St. was awesome. I hear the are closed temporarily closed while the Plaza Hotel is under renervations. Just another one to add to the list. ;)

My husband I enjoy Tinoco’s restaurant at the Vegas Club. The pastas that are served are delicious that are made to order. I am a “foodie” and have participated twice in the Junior League of Pasadena’s cookbooks. I know food prep, ingredients and presentation. We have never had a bad meal there and I look forward to visiting Tinocos again. Each entree is a creative and flavorful meal. I highly recommend this bistro when you are visiting “Sin City”. And just as important is the “gaming” at the Vegas Club. They have the loosest slots and I do win however I wish I could learn to bring my WINNINGS back home!

Don B’s in the Fitz’s is a great restaurant. We have always had excellent service and food there. Plus floating around is a coupon for a free appetizer or dessert.

My mother and friends, spend at least one night always at the The Flame at the El Cortez, with Linda as our waitress.

Excellent time and awesome food, wonderful prices, especially if you have one of the coupons from las vegas advisors or american casino guide!!

It isn’t lavish like a strip steakhouse, but trust me, what you make up for in the prices for steak, seafood and wine and the wonderful time, more than makes the experience.

I have been to Binions steak house too, took my mom the first time we came back to vegas (now we come 2 x a year from Toronto, Canada). Also good, excellent Lobster and HUGE prime rib, prices higher. Different atmosphere though, more formal.

    Have a great time!!

Had dinner at Binion’s in January, food was good, but not outstanding, service was poor by Vegas standards. I had never been there, had some expectation of a great experience, walked away disappointed. Best steakhouse I have found on the Strip is the Range at Harrah’s.
